On World Population Day, new figures from the National Statistics Office (NSO) show that Malta’s population reached an estimated 588,254 people by the end of 2025.
The country’s population grew by 2.4% over the previous year, with net migration remaining the main driver of growth. In total, Malta recorded 13,906 more people arriving than leaving in 2025, with non-EU nationals accounting for 78.1% of that increase.
Meanwhile, natural population growth continued to slow. Resident live births fell slightly, while deaths increased, resulting in a 49.2% drop in natural increase compared to 2024.
The figures also show Malta’s population is ageing. People aged 65 and over now make up 18.4% of residents, while 14.3% of the population is under the age of 18.
At the end of 2025, 68.9% of residents were Maltese citizens, while 31.1% were foreign nationals. The highest concentration of foreign residents was recorded in the Northern Harbour District, where they account for 43.9% of the population.
The NSO also found that Tas-Sliema remains Malta’s most densely populated locality, with 18,186 people per square kilometre, followed by Tal-Pietà and L-Isla.
