Police Inspector Elliot Magro has been appointed as Malta’s new Animal Welfare Commissioner, taking over the role from Fleur Abela from 20th July.
Magro brings more than 21 years of experience within the Malta Police Force, including the past 11 years as an inspector. In recent years, he has led the Environment Protection Unit, overseeing investigations into environmental offences as well as cases involving animal cruelty and mistreatment.
His work in the field of animal welfare was recognised in 2022, when he received the Animal Welfare Commissioner’s Special Award for his efforts in enforcing laws protecting animals.
Magro succeeds Fleur Abela, who served as commissioner for around six months before being elected to Parliament in May.
The Office of the Commissioner for the Fair Treatment of Animals is responsible for promoting animal welfare and safeguarding the rights and protection of animals across Malta and Gozo.
