HOUSTON (CW39) – More than $400,000 has been raised to support the family of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old husband, father of three and small business owner who was killed in Houston by an federal immigration enforcement agent on July 7.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said an officer fired in self-defense that morning as the investigation continues.
By Friday evening, the the Salgado Araujo Family GoFundMe, organized by the family and the LULAC Institute, had collected more than 9,400 donations, reaching about 83 percent of its $500,000 goal. Organizers say the money will help Salgado Araujo‘s wife and three sons cover funeral and burial expenses, legal costs and everyday living expenses as they navigate an unexpected loss.
The outpouring of donations highlights how quickly communities can rally around a family facing tragedy. This also comes as protests after Salgado Araujo was fatally shot.
Who was Lorenzo Salgado Araujo?
NOW PLAYING
According to the fundraiser, he was a construction business owner known for his strong work ethic, fairness and willingness to help others. Organizers describe him as a devoted husband, father and provider who spent decades building a life for his family through his own business. Friends and loved ones remembered him as dependable and kind, someone who showed up for his family, neighbors and customers alike.
“He was the kind of man who showed up: for his family, for his friends, for his neighbors, and on every job he ever took,” the fundraiser says.
How will the donations help?
The funds will go directly to the victim’s wife and their three sons, according to the organizations. They also noted that the money will help pay for funeral and burial expenses, legal costs and everyday living expenses while the family adjusts to life without its primary provider.
The fundraiser also describes Salgado Araujo and his wife as high school sweethearts who built a life together over more than 35 years, raising three sons and working toward a better future for their family.
“Everything he built, he built for them,” it says.
What happens next?
The online fundraiser remains active as donations continue to come in. Organizers are encouraging anyone who is unable to contribute financially to share the fundraiser with others.
For the community, the response reflects how quickly neighbors and strangers can come together during a family’s most difficult moments. Even small donations or sharing verified fundraisers can make a meaningful impact for families facing unexpected tragedy.
