Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia secured both the gold and silver medals in the men's speed event at the 2026 World Climbing Series held in Chamonix, France, on Saturday night local time.
Veddriq Leonardo emerged as the champion after defeating compatriot Antasyafi Robby Al Hilmi in an all-Indonesian final.
Leonardo, who won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, clocked 4.89 seconds to clinch the top spot. Meanwhile, Al Hilmi took home the silver medal after completing the wall in 5.11 seconds.
Despite falling short of the title, Al Hilmi delivered an impressive performance from the qualification rounds to ensure Indonesia locked in the top two positions on the podium.
The bronze medal went to Japan's Ryo Omasa. He won the third-place race with a time of 4.701 seconds, beating China’s Zhao Yicheng who completed the wall in 4.704 seconds.
“I feel great. I feel grateful. It’s my first gold medal after the Olympics and it’s taken a long time to get it. I want to say thank you to everyone, it means a lot," Leonardo said, as quoted by the official World Climbing website.
He revealed that the victory felt particularly special as he had been struggling to recover from recent injuries.
"I haven’t climbed properly because I haven’t trained properly. I tried my best and I think this is a real achievement. I haven’t really touched a wall in training and then raced in Madrid and Krakow, and I just feel grateful for this achievement," Leonardo added.
