Indonesia's Desak claims women's speed gold in World Climbing Chamonix

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian climber Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi captured the gold medal in the women's speed event at the 2026 World Climbing Series in Chamonix, France, on Saturday night local time (July 11).

The victory marked Dewi's second consecutive title, following her win at the Krakow series just last week.

"I’m very happy. Tonight, I had the best performance and just enjoyed myself. I’m happy to get this gold for my country and my team," Dewi said after the race, as quoted by the official World Climbing website.

In the final round, she delivered a dominant performance to defeat Italy's Giulia Randi. The Indonesian athlete clocked in at 6.22 seconds, finishing comfortably ahead of Randi's 6.51 seconds.

The bronze medal went to France’s Capucine Viglione after finishing the race in 6.41 seconds, beating Isis Rothfork of the United States who completed the match in 6.53 seconds.

For both Randi and Viglione, the event marked their first-ever podium appearances in the World Climbing Series.

The championship was full of surprises. The knockout stages were marked by several upsets, with Team China unexpectedly eliminated in the round of 16.

In addition, world record holder Emma Hunt of the United States saw her run halted in the quarterfinals after a surprising defeat by Giulia Randi. Randi enjoyed an impressive campaign, eliminating several seeded athletes to secure her spot in the finals.

Meanwhile, Dewi was able to maintain her consistency throughout the knockout stages, ultimately securing the gold medal in the final race.

Her victory capped off a stellar showing for Indonesia in Chamonix. Overall, the Indonesian contingent took home three of the six medals contested in the speed climbing events, including two gold medals and one silver.
