Hong Kong police have arrested nine suspects, including two who are on a wanted list, for serious driving offences during a week-long crackdown on speeding and other road safety breaches.
A police spokesman said on Sunday that officers in the New Territories North region launched the law enforcement operation from July 5 to the past Saturday to maintain road safety on the region’s highways.
“The traffic headquarters of New Territories North has found in its analysis of highway traffic situations that many traffic accidents arise from reckless lane cutting, moving between lanes and other inappropriate driving behaviour such as disobeying lane traffic rules,” the spokesman said.
In the week-long operation, officers issued 194 traffic penalty tickets and court summonses, and arrested nine people for alleged dangerous driving and drink-driving offences.
Those arrested comprised eight men and a woman aged between 37 and 62, including a man and a woman who were wanted for other previous offences. All arrestees have been released on bail, and are required to report back to police in early August.
Officers have also seized six vehicles suspected to have been illegally modified.
