Dalaguete shooting: Gunman in tricycle driver slay nabbed in Cebu City

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Police have arrested the alleged gunman in the fatal shooting of a 58-year-old tricycle driver in Dalaguete, Cebu, while authorities continue searching for the suspected getaway driver.The 27-year-old suspect was arrested in Barangay Lorega, Cebu City, during a hot pursuit operation around 9:27 p.m. on Sunday, July 12.Police Master Sergeant Reynaldo Vidas of the Dalaguete Municipal Police Station said on Monday, July 13, that investigators identified the arrested suspect as the alleged gunman, while the motorcycle driver remains the subject of an ongoing manhunt.

Suspect has ties to Cebu City

According to Vidas, the suspect has family ties to both Cebu City and Dalaguete.He said the suspect’s mother is from Barangay Lorega in Cebu City while his father is from Dalaguete, explaining that he frequently travels between the two places.As of Monday, the suspect remains in police custody in Dalaguete, while investigators prepare a murder complaint for filing before the appropriate court.

Tricycle driver shot while working

The victim, a 58-year-old tricycle driver from Barangay Cawayan, Dalaguete, was attacked around 10:40 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, while driving along the national highway in Barangay Tapon with two passengers on board.Initial investigation showed that two men riding a motorcycle waylaid the tricycle before the back rider opened fire, striking the victim in the head.Although responders brought him to the nearest hospital for medical treatment, Vidas said the victim had already died at the scene.He was immediately identified by his family members at the crime scene.

Investigation led to arrest

Following the shooting, investigators conducted crime scene processing, reviewed closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, interviewed witnesses, and carried out intelligence gathering, which eventually led to the identification of the suspects and the arrest of one of them.Vidas earlier said personnel from Dalaguete Municipal Police Station had been divided into separate teams to simultaneously conduct follow-up investigations, backtrack CCTV footage, and pursue the fleeing suspects.
