Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno urged parents and teachers to prioritize children's physical and mental well-being, saying academic achievement alone is insufficient for healthy development.
"You may score 10 in mathematics, but if you are not physically and mentally healthy, what does it mean?" Pratikno said on Monday.
He made the remarks during the National Movement for Safe and Comfortable Spaces for Children, held to support the Friendly School Orientation Period and attended online.
Pratikno said academic achievement must be supported by physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being.
He said childhood mental health problems often stem from abuse, with violence harming psychological development and limiting children's future potential.
Children exposed to violence may develop chronic fear, anxiety, emotional instability or aggressive behavior, while others become withdrawn and socially isolated, he said.
"At school, they may struggle to concentrate, face learning difficulties, have low self-esteem, feel worthless and find it difficult to trust others," he said.
Pratikno called for creating four safe and supportive environments to protect children.
He said the first is the family, followed by educational institutions such as schools, madrasahs and Islamic boarding schools.
He also urged regional leaders to help create safe public spaces for children.
"The fourth is ensuring safety and comfort in the digital space," he said.
