Tootsy Angara — yes, the wife of Education Secretary Sonny Angara — is probably better known as the woman behind ConnectEd: Tech for All, an initiative that has been bringing laptops, connectivity, and digital training to students in the country’s last-mile schools.
She’s also one of the country’s most respected media executives, serving as ABS-CBN’s cluster head for advertising and sales.
Now she’s adding an unexpected role to that list — playing journalist Maya Mae Kalaw, or MMK, in ABS-CBN’s action-drama series “Blood vs Duty.”

In her role as MMK, she hosts “Inside the Truth,” an investigative program, in which she refuses to let victims become statistics and believes every story deserves to be heard.
Angara explains why the role appeals to her: “I’ve always believed that you understand people better when you take time to see the world from where they stand. Whether you’re building programs for children, working with clients, or playing a journalist, it always begins with listening.”
It’s a philosophy she has quietly practiced for years.
ConnectEd: Tech for All was born after Angara and broadcast journalist Karen Davila saw firsthand how students in remote schools were being left behind simply because they lacked access to technology.

The initiative has been providing laptops, internet connectivity, and digital training for schools that are often hardest to reach.
That same mindset shapes how she approaches her work at ABS-CBN and even acting.

For Angara, good journalism is never just about asking questions. It’s also about understanding people well enough to ask the right ones
As MMK, she investigates some of the series’ biggest cases, from the Isla Damai massacre to the Easton Valley Montessori school shooting and the Miraikona Summit hostage crisis.
Through interviews, evidence gathering, and relentless reporting, MMK helps unravel the illegal gun smuggling network at the center of the story.
Off camera, Angara says the experience reminded her why journalism still matters.
“We live in a world where it’s easy to react and much harder to understand,” she says. “Journalists remind us to slow down, verify, and listen before drawing conclusions.”
It’s also a reminder that making a difference rarely starts with grand gestures. Sometimes it begins by asking what problem is in front of you. Sometimes it means helping a child get a laptop. Sometimes it means giving someone a voice.
And sometimes, it means stepping into another person’s shoes long enough to understand why their story matters.
“Blood vs Duty airs weeknights at 8:45 p.m. on ABS-CBN, ALLTV2, A2Z, Kapamilya Channel, and Kapamilya Online Live.
