
MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Mark Villar has filed Senate Resolution No. 507 congratulating and commending tennis star Alexandra “Alex” Maniego Eala for her historic achievements and invaluable contributions to Philippine sports, recognizing her as an inspiration to millions of Filipinos, especially the youth.
“Vamos, Alex! Your success proves that Filipino athletes are world-class. Your drive, discipline, and patience inspire our youth to dream big and work hard to reach their dreams,” Villar said in Filipino in a statement.
His resolution praises Eala’s historic performance at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, where she became the first Filipino to reach the Round of 16 in a Grand Slam singles tournament after defeating some of the world’s top players, including reigning Wimbledon champion and former World No. 1 Iga Świątek.

At just 21 years old, Eala has already built an extraordinary career, he noted.
She became the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam junior singles title at the 2022 US Open, the first Filipino in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam main-draw singles match, a WTA singles champion, a 2025 SEA Games gold medalist, and the highest-ranked Filipino tennis player in history after reaching World No. 28.

“What’s most admirable about Alex is her character. In every interview and public appearance, you can see her humility, respect for her opponents, and love for the Philippines. This proves the good upbringing her family gave her as a model athlete and a good citizen,” Villar said.
Addressing Eala, Villar said: “Keep on carrying our flag with honor. The entire Filipino nation is proud of you and believes you have a lot more history to write for our country. Again, congratulations, Alex! The entire Filipino nation is behind you in every match and victory,” he added. /atm
