The current brutal heatwave blasting
Italy is a choice of politicians, climate action group
Extinction Rebellion (ER) said on posters they plastered across
Turin Sunday night.
"This heat is kindly offered by the government and the Piedmont
Region" and "This heat is a choice" are some of the posters that
appeared last night in several residential areas of Turin in the
Aurora and Quadrilatero Romano neighborhoods.
The initiative is by Extinction Rebellion, whose goal, according
to activists, is to denounce that "what we are experiencing is
the result of the political choices of recent years."
The focus, in particular, is on "the energy policy of the
government, which favors fossil fuels, and of the Piedmont
Region, where 52% of electricity still comes from the combustion
of methane gas."
ER also emphasizes that "the statements by (Senate Speaker)
Ignazio La Russa, 'We will get used to the Caribbean climate, it
doesn't mean we will die', and by regional environment councilor
Matteo Marnati, 'I invite everyone to follow some simple
precautions, paying particular attention to the most
vulnerable', have been criticized by many observers as
downplaying the severity of the situation, underestimating the
hardship and suffering of the population."
