Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has said the establishment of state police would enhance efforts to tackle insecurity by giving governors effective control over security operations in their states.
Lawal stated this while speaking at the Arise News Town Hall Summit on Building a National Consensus for State Police and National Security held in Abuja.
He said governors are constitutionally regarded as chief security officers of their states but lack operational control over security agencies.
“We are called chief security officers of our respective states; however, the command and control structure is not under the governors,” he said.

The governor said state police would enable state governments to assume greater responsibility for protecting lives and property while making governors more accountable for security outcomes.
According to him, the arrangement would also improve policing by increasing personnel and ensuring quicker responses to local security challenges.
Lawal dismissed concerns that state governors would use state police to suppress political opponents, noting that many states already operate local security outfits without such abuses.
He, however, called on lawmakers to establish legal safeguards that would prevent any misuse of the proposed state police structure.
The summit brought together governors, lawmakers, security experts, civil society organisations, traditional rulers and other stakeholders to deliberate on national security reforms.
