President Trump said Monday that he will be addressing the nation later this week amid escalations with Iran over the Strait of Hormuz.
The speech is set to be delivered on Thursday at 9 p.m. EDT, Trump announced on Truth Social.
He did not say what the speech would be about, but it comes amid signs the war with Iran, rather than ending after a memorandum of understandings last month was to have triggered negotiations, is actually accelerating again.
Trump earlier on Monday announced that a naval blockade will be placed back on Iranian ships in the strait and that the U.S. will be acting as its “guardian.” That followed new reports of strikes by the U.S. and Iran on Sunday.
“All other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait,” Trump said earlier Monday, adding that the U.S. will be known as “the Guardian of the Hormuz Strait.”
He also said the U.S. will be “reimbursed” 20 percent on all cargo shipped “as a matter of FAIRNESS” for the security needed.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said Monday the blockade will go into effect on July 14 at 4 p.m. EDT.
The U.S. launched a “new wave of offensive strikes” against Iran on Sunday that stuck “dozens of targets.”
Iran has pushed back on the “illegal interference” of the strait, saying they won’t allow “a rogue and child-killing army” to take over.
