Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) on Monday called for a “full and impartial investigation” into a deadly shooting involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in her state.
“The shooting in Biddeford requires a full and impartial investigation of what happened. It is my understanding that the Biddeford police have secured the site and that the FBI is investigating,” Collins said in a post on the social platform X Monday afternoon.
Following a Monday morning shooting in Maine, which allegedly involved an ICE officer, an individual was dead, according to The Hill’s sister network NewsNation. The shooting occurred in Biddeford, which is south of Portland by about 15 miles, at close to 7:20 a.m. EDT, per NewsNation, which also reported that no details surrounding the leadup to the shooting had been released by federal immigration officials.
ICE was targeting the shooting victim, who was facing a final order of deportation, NewsNation reported.
Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) said Monday morning that the Maine State Police were at the scene working with the Attorney General’s Office, Maine’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner and Federal officials. “I know that situations like these are alarming and frightening,” she added in a statement posted to X.
Last week, ICE killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican immigrant, in Houston. Lawmakers in Congress and Salgado Araujo’s family have pressed for an investigation into the fatal shooting.
Earlier this year, federal immigration authorities shot and killed two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, in Minneapolis, leading to mass backlash against the Trump administration, which had already been criticized for its harsh immigration policy.
