Man nabbed for shooting cop over 'affair' with wife in Cotabato

COTABATO CITY  – Authorities arrested here on Monday a suspect who allegedly tried to kill a police officer whom he suspected of having an affair with his wife, officials said.

“It can be classified as a crime of passion,” Cotabato City Mayor Bruce Matabalao said.

The mayor added the suspect “admitted” to the crime, claiming that he suspected his wife of having an affair with Police Cpl. Titing Kauring.

Matabalao said the suspect claimed to have discovered text message exchanges between his wife and the police officer.

Col. Jibin Bongcayao, city police director, identified the suspect as alias “Jamir,” 29, a resident of Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat but temporarily living with his wife in Sultan Kudarat town in Maguindanao del Norte.

Bongcayao said the suspect shot the policeman, who was driving a motorbike along Jose Lim Street on Sunday, July 12.  Kauring was injured and is recuperating in the hospital.

During Jamir’s purported attempt to kill Kauring, a tricycle driver, identified as Nasser Gapor, was killed in the process, and a stray bullet injured a child.

Jamir’s wife was on board the same tricycle but was unharmed.

On Monday morning, Jamir was driving his CRF motorcycle on his way home to Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat, when police arrested him at a border checkpoint manned by police and Marines in Barangay Poblacion 9, Cotabato City.  A caliber .45 pistol was recovered from him.
