The Kano State Police Command has recovered a pistol and a vehicle suspected to have been stolen during its ongoing “Operation Clean Plate,” launched to rid the state of vehicles with concealed, defaced or missing registration number plates.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the command headquarters in Kano on Monday.
Bakori said the operation, which commenced on July 6, had so far led to the interception of 123 vehicles with concealed, defaced or no registration number plates.
He said all drivers of the intercepted vehicles had been charged to court and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“The objective remains clear: to rid Kano State of vehicles plying the roads with covered, defaced or no registration numbers. This is not a mere traffic violation but a deliberate tactic employed by criminals to create anonymity, commit crimes and evade detection,” he said.
The commissioner said the command recorded a major breakthrough on July 9 when operatives attached to the Panshekara Police Division intercepted a vehicle without a registration plate at about 11 a.m.
According to him, the 15-year-old driver allegedly refused to stop when flagged down and attempted to flee but was eventually apprehended.
Bakori said a search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a Beretta pistol, suspected Indian hemp, a sharp knife, electric wires, 120 lithium batteries and the vehicle, which is suspected to have been stolen.
He added that the suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation, while efforts were ongoing to trace the source of the firearm and other recovered items.
The police commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to sustaining the operation as part of efforts to tackle crime and improve public safety across the state.
