Voting has commenced to determine winners of first batch for DTN @100 Heroes Award being organized as part of activities to celebrate 100 years of Daily Times Newspaper, published by Folio Communications.
This was disclosed on Tuesday, in a statement signed by Bolaji Okusaga and Bonaventure Phillips Melah, Chairman and Executive Secretary, respectively, of the Times Heroes Awards Council.
The statement recalled that the Council had on Thursday, July 2nd 2026, at the Muson Event Centre, Onikan Lagos, unveiled nominees in 35 categories for the Awards, which was later expanded to 50 categories, as a result massive public response and nomination with over 4million participants so far.
The Award Council said also nominees were chosen by the Nigerian public and Nigerians in Diaspora with specified criteria which include age requirement of at least 16 years with a minimum of Senior Secondary School Certificate while registered professional bodies are also eligible to vote.
The Council reiterated its earlier position that an Outstanding Journalist of the Year would win a cash prize of N10m to be presented at the award ceremony scheduled to take place at the Bola Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja, adding that it is working with the Nigerian Union of Journalists and other relevant stakeholders to determine the winner of that category.
Among those who have been nominated for the first batch of 25 include the Presidents of Ghana and Zambia, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, APC national chairman Prof. Mentawe Yilwatda, opposition leader, Seriake Dickson, Africa’s richest man, Aliko Danote, Mike Adenuga and Ooni of Ife, Oba Ojaja 11, among others.
In addition, 10 pioneer staff and management of Daily Times are to be honoured at the event, some posthumously including Babatunde Jose, Vanguard Publisher Sam Amuka, Onyema Ugochukwu,Yemi Ogunbiyi, Dele Cole and Aremu Segun Osoba, among others.
State governor nominees include Hope Uzodinma, Mohammed Bago, Sule Abdullahi, Dauda Lawal, Dapo Abiodun, Peter Mba, Sherrif Obowevwori and Bala Mohammed while ministers are Nyesom Wike, Festus Keyamo, Tunji- Ojo even as Ali Ndume, Aliyu Ahmed Wadada, Mohammed Sani Musa, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Kingsley Chinda and Julius Ihonvbere were nominated among lawmakers.
Also nominated are Zacch Adedeji, Tantita Security, Olasupo Olusi, Jane Egerten-Idehen, Charles Odii and Ladi Ahmed Jato.
The Council therefore directed the public to vote for nominees of their choice on the website awards www.timesheroesawards.com
“The Award Council hereby announces that selection process for the 1st 25 categories would be concluded on July 20, 2026 and winners made public same day.
“Consequently, the public is hereby invited to take advantage of the window, to vote nominees of their choice for the underlisted categories.
“For continued transparency and credibility of the process, as well as ensure participants are informed members of the public, voters are expected to be at least 16 years and above; a minimum of Senior Secondary School Certificate while duly registered organisations and professional bodies are qualified to vote,” the statement concluded.
