Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has instructed a special fuel price of Rp15,000 (US$0.83) per liter for commercial fishing operators which operate vessels between 30 to 200 gross tons (GT).
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto announced the policy following a meeting chaired by President Subianto at the Hambalang Residence in Bogor District, West Java, on Monday.
"Since the commercial fishers need special pricing, we discussed and agreed on a rate of Rp15,000 per liter," Hartarto said.
He added that non-subsidised fuel prices had previously reached Rp21,300 per liter; while small-scale fishers operating vessels under 30 GT already receive subsidised fuel at Rp6,800 per liter.
According to the minister, the average domestic production cost of diesel is around Rp18,600 per liter. The roughly Rp3,600 per liter difference will be covered by the Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDP) rather than the state budget.

"Therefore, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources will issue a regulation regarding this support, with the subsidy of approximately Rp3,600 per liter to be funded by the BPDP," Hartarto explained.
He further said BPDP has enough budget to support the initiative, which will have a quota of 400,000 tons for six months.
Meanwhile, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said the policy aims to provide certainty for businesses in the fisheries sector, easing operating costs for fishers.
"This is all part of our effort to provide certainty for our business players in the fisheries sector, as prices are currently quite high. With this Rp15,000 rate, we hope to support operations for those with vessels of 30 GT and above," Lahadalia remarked.
He affirmed his ministry will immediately follow up on the president's instruction by issuing a decree. Lahadalia also emphasised that the funding to support the pricing will come from non-state budget sources.
