Opposition leader Alex Borg visited Swieqi yesterday, where he met with residents and members of the local council to discuss ongoing concerns surrounding safety and cleanliness in the locality.
In a video shared on social media, Borg described the issues as longstanding, stressing the importance of continuing to support local councils as they deal with increasing pressures.
He also called for stronger enforcement, saying residents should be able to feel safe in their own homes.
“What’s happening in Swieqi is a symptom that reflects a government’s attitude where local councils are left to solve issues caused by them,” Borg said.
He argued that the problems stem from “mass tourism based on quantity over quality, overpopulation, lack of managing litter, and unethical behaviour towards residents that is threatening the safety of our community.”
Borg concluded by calling for immediate action, warning that the situation will continue to deteriorate if it is not addressed.
What do you make of the situation?
