Italy's media watchdog said Tuesday
that the face of those who guide technology in the AI age must
remain human, as the pope said in a recent encyclical.
"The message that Pope Leo XIV entrusted to the encyclical
"Magnifica Humanitas" takes on essential value: technology s not
neutral, because it takes on the face of those who design it,
finance it, regulate it, and use it," said Agcom
(communications authority) President Giacomo Lasorella during
his Annual Report to Parliament.
"If technology reflects the face of those who design, govern,
and use it, it is up to the institutions to ensure that that
face remains recognizable, human, and responsible."
Lasorella also highlighted the importance of safeguarding
informational pluralism online as tech becomes more
sophisticated but at the same time easier to manipulate.
"Even in light of the increasingly pervasive emergence of
generative artificial intelligence, one of the most relevant
issues is safeguarding informational pluralism online, as a
prerequisite for the stability of the public sphere and
democratic debate," he said.
