BIJNOR: A suspended police constable allegedly went on a drunken driving rampage on the Delhi-Lucknow Highway late Monday night, injuring two people and creating panic among motorists before being caught and beaten by an angry crowd.According to police, the accused, identified as Sanjeev Tomar, was allegedly driving his car under the influence of alcohol when he hit two pedestrians, leaving them seriously injured. Instead of stopping to help, he allegedly continued speeding along the highway. Eyewitnesses said the constable kept driving even after one of the car's tyres came off, with the vehicle running on its rim for some distance, creating a dangerous situation on the busy highway.The incident occurred around 11 p.m. when Amit Kumar, a resident of Didauli, was returning home with his family from Joya. Soon after the collision, frightened motorists and local residents chased the vehicle and managed to stop it. Enraged by the incident, they allegedly assaulted the constable before police arrived at the scene.Police rescued the accused from the crowd and took him into custody. The two injured victims were shifted to a private hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
A case has been registered against Sanjeev Tomar under attempt to murder and other relevant sections of the law. Station House Officer Jitendra Baliyan said the entire incident is under investigation and further legal and departmental action will be taken based on the findings.Police sources said Tomar had already been placed under suspension from his posting with the Dial 112 emergency response unit over alleged dereliction of duty. A report submitted by the local police station had led to his suspension by the Superintendent of Police even before the latest incident. The fresh case is expected to invite stricter departmental action.
