A visit to the United Kingdom by Pope
Leo XIV in the not-so-distant future is likely, the Vatican's
envoy to Britain said Tuesday.
The pope's representative in Great Britain, Nuncio Archbishop
Miguel Maury Buendía, said he hopes that Leo will visit England
and "awaken the conscience of the West." A papal visit to
England is "probable, desirable, and I would even say
inevitable," Buendía, the apostolic nuncio to Great Britain
since 2023, told EWTN.
A visit to Great Britain is "probable, because King Charles III
made a state visit to the Vatican last year, and it is logical
that the United Kingdom now invites Pope Leo XIV to return the
visit," he added.
The last pope to make an official visit to the United Kingdom
was Benedict XVI in 2010.
Archbishop Maury said that, as an English-speaking pope, Leo
XIV's welcome would be "extraordinary, and his message would be
amplified throughout the English-speaking world.
"The bishops of England and Scotland also hope that a papal
visit can reinvigorate the proclamation of the faith in one of
Europe's most secularized societies, a society that, I would
say, is experiencing a period of grace," the papal
representative said.
