Marzipan masterpieces, live concerts and some of Portugal’s biggest music stars are set to draw thousands of visitors to Lagos later this month as the Arte Doce Fair returns.
The five-day festival, running from July 22 to 26, celebrates the Algarve’s rich confectionery heritage while offering a packed programme of music, showcookings, crafts and family activities.
This year’s edition, themed ‘Lagos – Between Traditions and the Multicultural Sea’, celebrates the city’s long history as a meeting point of different cultures, while welcoming Portugal’s Douro region as its guest of honour.
While the festival’s headline concerts are expected to draw large crowds, the heart of the event remains the Arte Doce competition, which showcases the artistry behind Algarve confectionery.
Using traditional ingredients such as almonds, figs and carob, pastry makers compete in categories including Traditional Quality, Innovation and Free Theme, with their intricate edible creations displayed throughout the event before the winners are announced on the final evening.
Visitors will also be able to watch a series of live showcookings, including demonstrations of the famous Dom Rodrigo dessert and regional cuisine from the Algarve, the Douro and Moldova.
Children can even try making their own Doce Fino – the Algarve’s colourful marzipan sweets shaped like fruit, flowers and animals – during a workshop organised by the Algarve Association of Regional Sweets (ADRA).
Each evening concludes with a major concert on the main stage, with headlining acts including Marisa Liz (July 22), Matias Damásio (July 23), Dino D’Santiago (July 24), Carlão (July 25), and Ana Moura (July 26).
Across the festival, visitors can also enjoy performances by local musicians, jazz ensembles, fado singers, tribute acts and DJs, while a Silent Disco returns on the nights of July 24 and 25.
Something for the whole family
Alongside the food and music, the festival includes craft stalls, traditional products, children’s workshops and an exhibition celebrating 40 years of Lusa, Portugal’s national news agency.
With free admission and activities beginning daily from 6pm, Arte Doce remains one of the highlights of the Algarve’s summer calendar.
