
MANILA, Philippines — An earthquake swarm has been detected offshore of Claveria in Masbate since Monday where 54 earthquakes have been recorded so far, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Tuesday.
According to the Phivolcs, the earthquake swarm was recorded beginning at 8:52 a.m. on Monday. It added that as of Tuesday, 28 of the 54 earthquakes have been plotted, and five have been felt with maximum intensity of Intensity V (strong) and magnitudes ranging from magnitude 1 to magnitude 5.4.

Phivolcs defined an earthquake swarm as “a series of earthquakes that are closely clustered in space and time, without a clearly defined mainshock-aftershock pattern. Such swarms may persist for days, weeks, or, in some cases, even longer.”

It then warned that swarm “may or may not lead to stronger earthquakes.”
With this, it advised residents to practice the following precautionary measures:
Be vigilant and practice earthquake preparedness
Know the safest and fastest route to the evacuation area
Prepare an emergency supply kit
Do the “duck, cover, and hold” during an earthquake
It also reminded coastal communities of the natural signs of a tsunami such as strong and long-lasting earthquake, unusual sea behavior, and loud roaring sound from the ocean. It added that residents must move to higher ground if any of these signs are observed. /mr
