MANILA – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded an earthquake swarm of 54 incidents off the coast of Claveria, Masbate, and urged residents near the shoreline to remain vigilant and be aware of natural warning signs of a possible tsunami.
In a social media post on Tuesday, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Phivolcs said the number was logged from 8:52 a.m. on July 13 to 4 p.m. on July 14, including five felt at Intensity V based on its Earthquake Intensity Scale.
“Ang mga lindol ay may lakas na Magnitude 1.6 hanggang 5.4 at lalim na 1 hanggang 45 kilometro (The earthquakes had a magnitude of 1.6 to 5.4 and a depth of 1 to 45 kilometers),” it added.

While there is no certainty that the swarm will lead to a stronger earthquake, the agency has urged residents, particularly those in coastal areas, to remain alert, practice earthquake preparedness and watch for natural warning signs of a possible local tsunami.

Phivolcs explained that an earthquake swarm is “a series of earthquakes that are closely clustered in space and time, without a clearly defined pattern”.
Unlike the more common sequence of a major earthquake followed by aftershocks, earthquake swarms occur without a clearly identifiable mainshock and “may persist for days, weeks, or, in some cases, even longer.”
Phivolcs clarified that an earthquake swarm “may or may not lead to stronger earthquakes”.
The agency advised residents to review the safest and fastest evacuation routes, prepare emergency supply kits, and remember to duck, cover, and hold during an earthquake.

For those living in coastal communities, it also reiterated the natural warning signs of a possible local tsunami, including strong, long-lasting earthquake (shake), unusual sea behavior (drop) and a loud roaring sound from the ocean (roar).
“If you observe any of these signs, immediately move to higher ground,” Phivolcs said.

The agency also urged the public to follow the instructions of their local government units and official advisories issued by the DOST-Phivolcs.
It assured that it will continuously monitor seismic activity in the area and will issue updates as necessary.
