Lebanon, Israel hold new round of talks in Rome

Venue shows Italy's importance in working for peace says Tajani

Lebanon and Israel on Tuesday started

a new round of peace talks in Rome.

Last month the countries reached a framework agreement on ending

the war between Israel and Hezbollah, but the Lebanon-based

Iran-backed Islamist group rejects the deal.

"I have spoken with the Lebanese and Israeli negotiators, who

agreed to Rome as the venue for the peace talks, and we hope

that Lebanon can finally find peace," Deputy Premier and Foreign

Minister Antonio Tajani said on the sidelines of an event at the

foreign ministry in Rome.

"The decision to bring the negotiations to Italy is proof that

our country has an important role in building peace.

"By participating in UNIFIL (the United Nations peacekeeping

mission in Lebanon) and in the training of Lebanese Armed Forces

personnel, we want to be lead players in building a free

Lebanon".
