Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Housing Minister Fahri Hamzah said he and Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X discussed President Prabowo Subianto's nationwide urban renewal plan, including new residential areas to modernize cities and expand affordable housing.
"Following up on ideas I previously outlined, we had a productive discussion. The President also has a comprehensive plan to improve cities across Indonesia," Hamzah said after the meeting on Tuesday.
Beyond revitalizing existing cities, Prabowo also plans to develop new residential areas to support Indonesia's long-term urban modernization, Hamzah said.
"Whether through the Three Million Houses program or the Clean Indonesia movement, this will become a major transformational effort in the future," he said.
Hamzah said he sought Yogyakarta's input because the province offers valuable experience in urban planning as one of Indonesia's oldest cities and a center of cultural heritage.
"We wanted to draw on the governor's experience and perspectives in shaping urban planning," he said.
According to Hamzah, the provincial government has accumulated broad expertise in urban development while observing social changes both in Indonesia and abroad.
He said Yogyakarta has identified several locations for future urban expansion, creating opportunities to modernize the region while improving access to affordable and decent housing.
"That is why we discussed everything, from the underlying philosophy to technical aspects of area development, including coastal zones and riverbanks," Hamzah said.
Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X said the meeting marked an initial step toward broader discussions on implementing and improving Indonesia's urban planning agenda.
