Core Cuore exhibition explores life in the digital age

A new contemporary art exhibition inspired by internet culture and the digital age opens at the Centro Cultural de Lagos on Saturday, July 18, inviting visitors to reflect on how technology is reshaping the way people think, feel and connect.

Core Cuore, on display until September 26, is the latest project to emerge from the acclaimed Festival Verão Azul, expanding the festival’s spirit of artistic experimentation into the gallery space.

Curated by artist duo Ana Borralho and João Galante, the exhibition brings together works by five international artists – Andy Thomas (Australia), Jordan Stone (United States), Molly Soda (United States), John Rising (United Kingdom) and Noper (United States) – whose practices span video, sound, installation and digital media.

The exhibition explores themes including online identity, social media, nostalgia, collective memory and the emotional effects of living in an era of constant digital connection.

Its title combines the English word “core”, meaning centre or essence, with the Italian “cuore”, meaning heart, reflecting the exhibition’s aim of balancing critical thought with emotional experience.

The project also draws inspiration from the corecore aesthetic, a visual language that emerged on platforms such as TikTok through rapid montages of video clips, memes, advertising and everyday moments. Often described as a response to information overload, the style has become a way of questioning the emotional and social impact of life lived online.

Rather than offering definitive answers, the exhibition encourages visitors to engage with the contradictions of a society that is more digitally connected than ever, yet often feels increasingly disconnected.

The exhibition is commissioned by Festival Verão Azul and produced by casaBranca in partnership with Lagos City Council and the Centro Cultural de Lagos.

Core Cuore opens with a free launch event at 5.30pm on Saturday, July 18, and admission to the exhibition is free throughout its run.
