Bener Meriah, Aceh (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said Indonesia will expand Gayo coffee production to boost exports and raise farmers' incomes, as the globally recognized Aceh specialty strengthens the country's plantation industry.
"We are developing Aceh and improving farmers' welfare through Gayo coffee, which is already known worldwide. Our next priority is expanding exports," Sulaiman said on Tuesday.
Coffee cultivation in Aceh has generated about Rp4 trillion (approximately US$246 million) in economic value, based on local government data, he said.
The government has supported coffee cultivation across about 17,000 hectares, with roughly 17 million coffee trees planted in production centers throughout Aceh.
Sulaiman said plantation expansion will continue next year, provided farmers maintain existing crops to improve productivity.
He also praised the Agriculture Ministry's regional offices in Aceh for strengthening nurseries and providing technical assistance that has improved the quality of coffee plants.
Gayo coffee's strong international reputation gives it significant potential to expand exports while promoting Indonesian coffee in global markets, he said.
Sulaiman said Indonesia's plantation commodity exports reached about Rp40 trillion (approximately US$2.46 billion) in 2025, with substantial room for further growth.
"We want Gayo coffee to become a global brand. Our plantation exports have reached Rp40 trillion, and we aim to increase that to Rp100 trillion (US$6.15 billion), or even Rp200 trillion (US$12.31 billion)," he said.
