What Selena Gomez Asked Benny Blanco Before Going Public With Romance

Selena Gomez wanted to make sure she was good for Benny Blanco.

Three years after the “Good for You” singer and the record producer started dating, he shared insight into a conversation they had right before she revealed their relationship in December 2023.

“We kept our relationship private for a long time, about eight or nine months,” Blanco said in an interview translated from Spanish with El Pais published July 13. “And she asked me, ‘Are you sure you want to do this? I understand if you want us to just be friends.’”

But Blanco (real name Benjamin Levin) was ready to tell the world he loved Gomez like a love song, baby.

“I said, ‘You know what? Screw it,’” the 38-year-old recalled. “We’re lucky because we both have friends and family we’ve known since before all this, and we’re surrounded by a good group of people we love.”

Indeed, despite being married to one of the most famous people in the world, Blanco has learned to strike a delicate balance on what he shares.

“I don’t like to expose my life,” he explained. “Famous people are under constant scrutiny: if you say one thing, it’s wrong, and if you say another, it’s also wrong. I’d like to have more privacy.”

As he put it, “Maybe I’ll occasionally post a picture of my wife or some delicious dish I’ve tried, but I hardly ever post anything on my Instagram that isn’t work-related.”

But Blanco assured that deciding what to share comes especially naturally since being with his baby.

“She’s been dealing with this her whole life,” he detailed of the Disney alum, “So it’s something we have to face together.”

Meanwhile, Gomez—who previously dated The Weeknd and Justin Bieber—has emphasized that what she’s found with Blanco feels so rare.

“It's really nice to also lean on someone who understands the world that I live in,” the 33-year-old explained during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in 2024. "I'd have to say overall it's the safest that I feel. It's been really lovely and I've only grown through it, so it's awesome.”
