State Highway 1 has reopened south of Kaikōura, just over a week after it was damaged by torrential rain and flooding.
The flooded Conway River ate away chunks of the road along more than a kilometre of the highway near Hawkswood.
The Transport Agency said stop/go traffic management was likely to be in place for several weeks while the full width of the highway was reinstated.
Motorists could expect delays of up to half an hour at peak times, Waka Kotahi said.
Monitoring for the risk of further slips would continue.
The Inland Kaikōura Road/Route 70 to the west of Kaikōura remains closed, with a detour route via State Highways 7, 65, 6 and 63.
