A seven-year-old girl has died in Queenstown after reportedly being sent home from hospital just hours before.
Maite Contreras Eulogio died last week after becoming unwell and being assessed at the Emergency Department at Lakes District Hospital, according to a Givealittle page set up by her family.
She was described as being a happy, healthy girl with no underlying medical conditions.
Her condition deteriorated just a few hours after being sent home, her family said.
"We rushed back to the Emergency Department. Tragically, she passed away shortly after our arrival."
Health New Zealand Southern and Te Waipounamu chief medical officer David Gow said it was a tragic situation that would impact everyone involved.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to this family for their loss and recognise the profound and long-lasting impact the death of their young daughter will have on her loved ones," he said.
Health NZ was looking into what happened and would conduct an internal review, he said.
A Ministry of Justice spokesperson confirmed the case had been referred to the Coroner.
Gow said Health NZ was unable to comment further.
