The Federal Character Commission (FCC) and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) have strengthened their partnership to ensure fairness in recruitment, promotions and other personnel matters in line with the Federal Character Principle and the Constitution.
The commitment was made on Tuesday during an interactive meeting between the FCC Committee on Works, Transport and Aviation and the management of the NRC at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Chairman of the committee and Federal Commissioner representing Enugu State, Peter Eze, said the engagement marked a shift from a reactive to a proactive approach in enforcing the federal character principle.
“We have made it clear that the commission has the constitutional mandate to oversee these processes. Going forward, any agency that carries out recruitment or promotion without involving the FCC will face appropriate action,” he said.
He commended the NRC management for embracing the commission’s new approach and pledged continued collaboration, adding that the FCC would also review the corporation’s nominal roll to ensure equitable representation of states in future recruitment.
Responding, NRC Managing Director, Dr Kayode Opeifa, described the meeting as productive and reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to national integration.
He said the railway remained a symbol of Nigeria’s unity and assured the commission of the corporation’s readiness to comply with the Federal Character Principle.
Opeifa also said the NRC was deploying technology to improve operations despite limited funding and would make prudent use of available resources.
FCC Executive Chairman, Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, said the commission preferred collaboration to confrontation in dealing with federal agencies.
She said the FCC remained committed to ensuring every Nigerian had a sense of belonging through strict compliance with the Federal Character Principle, but warned that agencies that deliberately violated constitutional provisions would be sanctioned.
Omidiran also disclosed that the commission had streamlined its approval process, with complete applications now receiving approval on the same day.
