As many as 13 Indians have been killed, and three are missing since the war began on February 28, government sources have said.
The latest casualties include two Indian nationals killed in separate Iranian strikes on the Gulf waters after a fragile ceasefire collapsed last week.
An Indian, who was reported missing on Sunday after an attack on a commercial vessel off the Oman coast, is dead, his family confirmed. As many as 11 Indian nationals were on board the GFS Galaxy vessel when it came under attack by Iran. Of them, 10 were rescued while one remained missing.
On Tuesday, another Indian sailor was killed, and 10 were injured as two UAE-flagged oil tankers came under fire from Tehran.
Condemning Tuesday’s attacks, India called for an immediate cessation of violence, particularly the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure, and restoration of “free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through international waterways in the region”.
“India is deeply concerned by the attacks on two vessels, MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, during their transit through the Strait of Hormuz today,” the MEA said in a statement.
It said that of the total 46 crew members on the two vessels, 30 were Indians. “Of the 12 Indian nationals onboard MT Al Bahiyah, one has tragically lost his life, and another has been injured,” the MEA said. “Of the 18 Indian nationals onboard MT Mombasa, nine have sustained injuries, including two who are reported to be seriously injured,” it said.
