‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ Stars Tease ‘Big Bang Theory’ Easter Eggs
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is hitting the small screen with a big bang.
And that’s thanks, in part, to the perfectly placed Big Bang Theory Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the sitcom’s forthcoming spinoff, which Lauren Lapkus promises fans of the original show are sure to spot.
“There's a bunch of Easter eggs within the show that I think if you're a fan, you'll catch all these little things,” Lapkus—reprising her role as Denise in the HBO Max follow-up—told E! News in an exclusive interview with E! News July 6, promising it’ll also feature “lots of cameos.”
While she and costar Kevin Sussman—also returning to reprise his role as Pasadena comic bookstore owner Stuart Bloom in the series—can’t say much about what those hidden references are, the pair did emphasize how the show will clear up a fan theory about Sussman's beloved character.
“It's alluded to in The Big Bang Theory that he sort of lives in the basement of his comic bookstore,” he explained. “But we finally get to see that space.”
Beyond detailing how the cast recreated the “magic” onscreen once more, Sussman also shared what he thinks of Stuart’s sweet digs, admitting, “I think they nailed it.”
In the upcoming series, Stuart and Denise are joined by Bert (Brian Posehn) and Barry (John Ross Bowie)—both Big Bang alums—for a mind-bending mission to save the world.

"Stuart Bloom is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki)," as HBO Max's series description reads, "accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise, geologist friend Bert, and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke."
"Along the way," the logline continues, "they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don’t go well."
And before you think that the HBO Max spinoff—the fourth show in the franchise after Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage—is polymerized tree sap and the original cast is inorganic adhesive, think again.

“I've spoken to a few different people who were on the show, and I think people were excited about it,” Lapkus continued to E! News. “I think that there was a lot of support there, which was really nice. And you might see some familiar faces in the show, and then you'll see that they're equally excited.”
But don’t be spooked if your favorite Big Bang Theory character doesn’t appear exactly as you remember.
“The awesome thing is that there are alternate versions of these characters,” Sussman added, “and so those actors that people recognize are so good and they're all so game and it was just a delight and they were all excited to bring something new to these characters.”
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe premieres July 23 at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO Max. For more shows coming out in 2026, read on…
