Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday lauded the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and said the economic linkages between the two nations are “going to get even deeper”.
The remark from the prime minister comes as the free trade agreement between India and UK came into force on Wednesday.
Calling the trade deal a “significant moment”, PM Modi said, “With the coming into force of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement and the Agreement on Social Security, our economic linkages are going to get even deeper. Together, these agreements translate our shared ambition into tangible opportunities for our people.”

PM Modi said that the trade deal will benefit the farmers, entrepreneurs and MSMEs and deepen cooperation in technology, professional services and innovation.
“This moment reflects the trust between our democracies and our resolve to build a forward-looking partnership driven by trade, technology, investment and innovation. India and the UK will continue working together for shared prosperity,” he said.
The India-UK CETA, which came into force earlier today, operationalised a free trade agreement under which a host of domestic goods will enter at zero duty in the British market.

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal announced the development in a social media post and said the agreement delivers zero-duty market access for nearly 99 per cent of India’s exports and covers almost 100 per cent of the total trade value.
“With the coming into force of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement and the Agreement on Social Security, our economic linkages are going to get even deeper,” Goyal said in a social media post.
