The supreme Court of Cassation on
Wednesday upheld murder convictions for five members of the
family of Saman Abbas, an 18-year-old Pakistani-Italian woman
who was the victim of an honour killing in Novellara, near
Reggio Emilia, in the spring of 2021, making them definitive.
The supreme court confirmed life-terms for the teen's parents,
Shabbar Abbas and Nazia Shaheen, and for two of her cousins,
Ijaz Ikram and Noman Ul Haq, and a 22-year sentence for her
uncle Danish Hasnain.
The prosecution says Saman Abbas was murdered for refusing an
arranged marriage and for leading a Western lifestyle that the
killers considered incompatible with the family's traditions.
Both parents had fled to Pakistan following the murder but were
extradited back to Italy.
