The newspaper, citing sources close to the investigation, reported that the pair are suspected to have inhaled carbon monoxide while inside a car that was switched on with the air conditioning running inside the garage.
According to the report, investigators are examining the vehicle’s air conditioning system, as faults in such systems have been linked to carbon monoxide exposure in similar cases.
However, police told Lovin Malta that the cause of death has not yet been officially determined, with autopsies still underway to establish exactly what happened.
Ryan Spiteri, 47, was identified shortly after the incident, while the identity of the 41-year-old woman who was with him has not yet been made public.
Police have already ruled out the involvement of third parties, while Duty Magistrate Dr Monica Borg Galea has opened a magisterial inquiry into the deaths.
Carbon monoxide is often referred to as the “silent killer” because it is colourless, odourless and tasteless. In enclosed spaces such as garages, dangerous concentrations can build up quickly if a vehicle is left running, potentially leading to unconsciousness and death without warning.
Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
