MARAMAG, Bukidnon — The body of a 6-year-old boy who had been missing for three days after being swept away by floodwaters in Bukidnon was recovered Wednesday afternoon at Pulangi River behind the Crystal Sugar Milling Co. Inc. here.
The boy was identified by his grandmother and older brother, bringing a tragic end to the search that began after he and his 12-year-old brother were carried away by strong currents while crossing a spillway with their father on a motorcycle in Quezon town on Monday.Police Corporal Early Bird Resaba of the Maramag police station, said a resident of Purok 8-A, North Poblacion, reported early Wednesday that a child’s body was seen floating in the river, locally known as “Lilo,” and notorious for its strong current.Resaba immediately coordinated with the Maramag Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) and the Quezon MDRRMO, prompting a joint search operation with the local police.Responders initially failed to locate the body, but at around 2 p.m., rescuers found it downstream from the reported location. The boy’s older brother, 12, was found dead Tuesday morning after his body became entangled in large tree debris in Katipunan River in Sitio Sadiri, near the Valencia City–Quezon boundary. The siblings were swept away on July 13 after the motorcycle they were riding with their father was overwhelmed by floodwaters while crossing the spillway near the boundary of Barangays Dagat-Kidavao in Valencia City and Lumintao in Quezon, Bukidnon.Their father survived after residents rescued him with ropes. /gsg
