Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti stated here on Wednesday that a new restriction on the use of gadgets for students in schools aims to minimise classroom distractions and enhance students' learning concentration.
According to Circular Letter Number 18 of 2026 on Restrictions on the Use of Electronic Devices in Educational Institutions, the inappropriate use of gadgets within school environments can potentially diminish students' focus and degrade the quality of peer interactions.
It may also raise the risk of digital technology misuse, which can adversely affect the students’ physical and mental health.
"Therefore, we are issuing guidelines to restrict gadget use in educational institutions to foster a safe and comfortable learning culture, as well as to support students' optimal growth and development," Mu'ti remarked.

In addition to enhancing the academic focus, he noted that the circular letter was issued to improve face-to-face social interactions among students.
In addition, it supports the Ministry’s programme to build students’ character and discipline, delivered through the Seven Habits of Great Indonesian Children (KAIH) movement.
Furthermore, the policy seeks to shield students from the negative impacts of inappropriate gadget use, cultivating a healthy, safe, wise, and responsible digital culture, while optimising technology for educational purposes.
The Ministry deems this policy highly relevant given the intensity of internet usage in Indonesia. Mu'ti cited data indicating that Indonesians spend an average of seven hours and 32 minutes surfing the internet daily.

"If they do not use this technology for positive purposes, many mental and physical health issues will arise. Therefore, we strongly expect collaboration among schools, families, communities, and digital service providers (to implement this policy)," he said.
Through the circular letter, the Ministry encourages school principals to adapt their disciplinary rules regarding gadget restrictions to best suit the specific needs and conditions of their respective institutions.
By doing so, the Ministry ensures digital technology remains an integral part of the learning process, albeit under clear and measured regulations.
