Jakarta (ANTARA) - The domestically produced N219 aircraft is expected to play a vital role in supporting essential pioneer flight routes across the Indonesian archipelago, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono stated.
He noted that many regional leaders—particularly those governing remote and isolated areas—have expressed a critical need for tactical air connectivity due to challenging geographic conditions that are simply inaccessible to large aircraft.
"This is where the demand from local governments and business players aligns. Why? Because of limited infrastructure. Our focus must be on pioneer flight routes,” Yudhoyono noted here on Wednesday.
Designed and manufactured by state-owned aerospace company PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI), the twin-engine N219 is built specifically to operate in unforgiving environments, including mountainous terrain and dense rainforests.
Its standout feature is its short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability, allowing it to function as a rugged "flying jeep.”
The aircraft can safely land and take off on unpaved dirt or grass runways measuring just 800 meters in length.
Yudhoyono pointed out that runways do not need to be long, thick, or paved—making the N219 a cost-effective solution for local governments that cannot afford to build massive airport infrastructure.
He further highlighted the aircraft's strong national identity, boasting a domestic component level of over 46 percent.
“This is truly domestically developed and produced… And this is a very good thing [for our industrial sovereignty],” he added.
PTDI is currently preparing the 19-passenger N219 to officially enter the commercial market, targeting both passenger transport and cargo logistics to link isolated provinces.
PTDI President Director Gita Amperiawan confirmed that the aerospace firm is actively building up the domestic support ecosystem to ensure the rollout's success.
