President Trump said Tuesday he isn’t looking to negotiate with the Iranians right now.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump lamented that the Iranian regime was “evil” and pointed to the newest Iranian delegation as “the ones that are stopping a deal.”
The president’s interview with Trey Yingst came amid new waves of strikes against Iran.
This week’s escalation arrives after the U.S. accused the Middle Eastern country of violating the memorandum of understanding by attacking commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and preventing their safe passage through the waterway.
Yingst questioned whether the U.S. was dealing with the “wrong people,” and Trump responded, “Well, now, I don’t want to negotiate now. I said, ‘Let’s not negotiate.’ Three days ago, we had a deal.”
However, discussions with the Iranians remain ongoing.
When asked the last time he spoke with an Iranian official, Trump responded that his “representatives” had talked with the Iranians “an hour ago.”
The president didn’t elaborate on the content of those conversations but instead emphasized that the Iranians are desperate to reach an agreement.
“They want to make a deal, but every time they make a deal, they break it,” Trump said. “They don’t want to die. People don’t want to die.”
The memorandum, signed by Trump and the Iranian president on June 17, sought to pause fighting and give time for both nations to reach a more complete solution to the conflict.
But the 14-point agreement has deteriorated in recent weeks. Fighting escalated this week, with the U.S. reimposing a naval blockade on the strait on Tuesday afternoon. The U.S. struck Iranian sites on Wednesday morning, the fifth attack in as many days.
“They’ll continue until I say, ‘it’s enough,'” Trump told Yingst about the recent strikes.
