Jeweler convicted by top court of killing robbers

Mario Roggero sentenced to 14 years and 9 months in prison in supreme court ruling

Mario Roggero, a jeweler from Gallo

di Grinzane, in the province of Cuneo, was sentenced by Italy's

top court to 14 years and 9 months Wednesday for killing two

robbers and wounding a third man after a heist at his shop on

April 28, 2021.

The judges of the First Criminal Section of the Supreme Court of

Cassation have ruled this sentence definitively.

Right-wing parties have protested against the conviction saying

Roggero was legitimately defending himself and his property. The

jeweler has garnered particularly strong support from Deputy

Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, leader of the

right-wing League party.
