GNR police are stepping up road patrols and traffic enforcement across the Algarve from until Sunday (July 19) as thousands of motorcyclists arrive for the 44th Faro International Motorcycle Rally.
The operation will focus on the main roads leading into the Algarve and access routes to Vale das Almas, where one of Europe’s largest motorcycle gatherings is taking place.
With a significant increase in motorcycle traffic expected, officers will carry out patrols, roadside checks and awareness campaigns aimed at improving road safety and keeping traffic flowing smoothly.
In a statement, the military police force said particular emphasis will be placed on encouraging riders to wear appropriate protective equipment, including approved helmets, gloves, jackets, trousers and boots, while reminding them to avoid excessive speed, dangerous overtaking and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Motorcyclists remain among the most vulnerable road users
The operation comes against the backdrop of concerning road safety figures.
According to the GNR, 8,015 road accidents involving motorcycles were recorded in Portugal during 2025, resulting in 114 deaths, 643 serious injuries and 5,670 minor injuries.
Motorcyclists accounted for around 30% of all road deaths last year, despite representing only a fraction of overall traffic.
Between 2020 and 2025, motorcycles were involved in crashes responsible for approximately 27% of road fatalities, 32% of serious injuries and 20% of minor injuries.
Safety advice
As a result, the GNR are urging all participants to:
Always wear an approved helmet and suitable protective clothing.
Adapt speed to road, traffic and weather conditions.
Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
Avoid dangerous overtaking and sudden manoeuvres.
Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Check that tyres, brakes and lights are in good working order before travelling.
