The Nicaraguan government has said
its intends to sever diplomatic relations with Italy after
Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called it
"extremist", ANSA sources said on Thursday, confirming a report
in Il Corriere della Sera.
Speaking a forum in Madrid on Wednesday for the 50th anniversary
of the European People's Party (EPP), Tajani said Italy has
nothing in common "with the vision of extremist governments such
as that of Nicaragua, a country that still provides protection
to dangerous terrorists from the Red Brigades, such as Alessio
Casimirri."
According to reports, the Italian Embassy in Managua received a
letter of protest from the Nicaraguan government overnight and
the Italian Foreign Ministry has been informed.
