A 65-year-old woman has been taken to hospital after being tied up during a violent robbery at a house in Belas, Sintra, in the early hours of this morning.
According to some reports, as many as six men were involved. They are understood to have climbed into the house while the victim was there alone. She was bound and gagged as the men gathered up jewellery reportedly worth around €50,000.
Portugal’s Public Security Police (PSP) has confirmed the break-in to Notícias ao Minuto, saying officers were alerted to the incident at around 1.50am.
It was the police who confirmed that the women inside the house at the time later required treatment in hospital.
The PSP confirmed that several pieces of jewellery were stolen but have not disclosed a value, nor how it is that they were called to the scene.
CNN Portugal adds that the woman was tied to her bed – and that PJ judicial police have taken over the investigation “due to the nature of the crime”.
The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests this far have been reported.
