Portugal’s medicines authority Infarmed has ordered the immediate withdrawal and suspension of sales of a sunscreen after inspections uncovered discrepancies between the protection advertised on the label and the results obtained in laboratory testing.
The measure affects Perfect Skin 50 FPS Protetor Solar, marketed by ACBB Nails, Import & Export, Lda., which Infarmed says was placed on the market without meeting all applicable legal requirements.
According to the regulator, laboratory analysis found inconsistencies between the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) stated on the product’s label and the level of protection measured during testing. Inspectors also identified a lack of evidence supporting the product’s claimed UVA protection.
Infarmed further concluded that the packaging claim stating the sunscreen “acts 100% against the sun’s rays” failed to comply with European rules requiring cosmetic product claims to be truthful, honest and allow consumers to make informed decisions.
As a result, the authority has ordered the product’s immediate removal from the Portuguese market.
Businesses that still hold stocks of the sunscreen have been instructed to stop selling or using it and to contact the responsible company for further guidance.
Infarmed has also issued a warning to the public. “Consumers who have this product should not use it,” the authority said.
The recall forms part of Infarmed’s ongoing market surveillance programme, which aims to ensure cosmetic products sold in Portugal comply with legal requirements and provide consumers with accurate information about the level of protection they offer.
