The U.S. military continued to strike Iran early Thursday, as hostilities between the two countries ramp up after the deterioration of a brief ceasefire.
U.S. Central Command (Centcom) said it concluded strikes against the Islamic Republic at 9 p.m. EST, which is 4:30 a.m. in Iran.
U.S. forces hit Iranian command centers, air defense sites, missile and drone capabilities and coastal surveillance facilities to “further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten innocent mariners crewing commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” Centcom added.
The command said it used precision munitions to hit its targets, including in Bandar Abbas, a port city located on the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. forces on Wednesday also struck coastal defense and missile sites during a 90-minute attack on Greater Tunb Island in the eastern Persian Gulf, according to Centcom.
The U.S. and Iran have exchanged repeated strikes this month, as President Trump informed Congress last week the war with Tehran resumed on July 7 — restarting the 60-day clock for the U.S. to engage in hostilities with Iran without congressional approval. Under the War Powers Act, Trump can extend military posture against Iran for 30 days if he justifies it to Congress.
Iranian media on Thursday morning reported U.S. strikes around the provinces of Hamedan, Hormozgan, Khuzestan, Lorestan, Markazi and Sistan and Baluchistan, according to The Associated Press (AP).
In response, Iranian forces launched missile and drone attacks on Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait, the AP reported. The U.S. has military bases in all three countries, with Iran launching a number of attacks on those sites since the U.S. and Israel launched the war on Feb. 28.
On Tuesday, the U.S. military death toll during the war rose to 14, after the Navy identified the airman lost over the Arabian Sea last week. The airman, Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, was the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5.
Iranian health official Hossein Kermanpoir said Thursday the U.S. strikes on Iran this month have killed at least 35 people and wounded another 300, according to Middle East Eye.
