Jakarta (ANTARA) - An explosion at a central ammunition depot in Madiun Regency, East Java, on Thursday morning killed an Indonesian Army soldier and injured six others, the military confirmed.
"One service member was confirmed dead, while four others suffered serious injuries and two sustained minor injuries," Army Information Office Chief Brigadier General Donny Pramono stated during a press conference at the army headquarters here.
Pramono noted that the explosion occurred while personnel were conducting routine maintenance and inspection of ammunition stocks inside a storage facility.
A specialized team has been dispatched to Madiun to investigate the blast, he said, adding that the military will wait for the inquiry to conclude before providing further details on the incident.
"We hope all parties can give the investigation team room to work optimally and avoid speculation about the cause of the explosion before the probe concludes," he remarked.
Following the incident, the army promptly cordoned off the facility to secure the area, with top brass and military police officers inspecting the site while guards restricted access to outsiders.
Meanwhile, the soldiers injured in the explosion were evacuated to the Caruban Regional General Hospital.
Pramono confirmed that all victims had received immediate medical attention, as army personnel were seen securing the hospital's emergency department and mortuary.
