Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Army has formed an investigation team to determine the cause of a deadly ammunition depot explosion in East Java on Thursday, army spokesperson Brigadier General Donny Pramono announced.
The blast, which occurred at the military's central ammunition storage facility in Madiun Regency, killed one soldier and injured six others.
Pramono stated that the explosion occurred while personnel were conducting routine maintenance on the military hardware.
However, officials have not yet detailed the exact cause or the specific types of ammunition involved.
"We have formed an investigation team to conduct a thorough and comprehensive inquiry to determine the exact chronology and cause of the incident," Pramono told a press conference in Jakarta.
"Based on initial reports, the incident occurred while personnel were carrying out material ammunition inspection and maintenance procedures in one of the storage warehouses," he added.
The injured soldiers, whose conditions range from light to severe, have been evacuated to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment.
The military has urged the public and media to refrain from drawing early conclusions while investigators conduct their fieldwork in Madiun.
"We also invite all parties to provide space for the investigation team to work optimally and to avoid speculation regarding the cause of the incident before the entire inspection process is completed," Pramono said.
